As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Commi* for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.
65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.
In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.
He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as hebecame older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.
When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was dee* touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.
Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. I don’t know who wrote these words, but I’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. We are all in the position of the farmers. The first lesson our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves.Frankly speaking, we were not good students at all. I still remember theunderwear that was soaked in soapy water for one and a half years before it wasfinally thrown away. Almost each of the boys dormitories had graduallydeveloped its own unique "fragrance" usually a mixture of rotten fruit, unwashedsocks, stunk towels and some junk food. We could tell one dormitory from anotherby sniffing instead of looking. Our tolerance towards untidiness wasamazing.
However, in spite of all this, we really did make some progress. Bit bybit, we started to wash dirty clothes before they stunk, cleaned the garbage binwhen it could hold no more trash, we even used brushes in a not-sc-successfulattempt to refurbish the floor. The point was that we were not obeying anyorder, we did every bit of the cleaning for ourselves, because we wanted to livein a better place. Though nothing we did could be called an achievement, it wasthe first time we fully bore the consequences of our behavior, and took theresponsibility.
Thus it was not surprising that I often found myself the only one to cleanup my university dormitory which looked no better than a garbage bin when myroommates felt normal of it.
When talking about our dormitory life, and probably all the dormitory life,we should never leave out one thing. This was what we called "bed talks". Thoughit was considered "illegal,"there was nothing to stop us from deliberatelystarting a heated discussion right after lights were out. It was our favoriteand the only way of ending our day, and we were as punctual for it as ourparents are for work. What was the most common topic?Girls, of course! Whatother topics were there for three energetic adolescent males lying comfortablyin bed? We judged them,ranked them, argued over them night after night withoutfeeling the slightest sense of boredom for three whole years. Were we maniacs? Who is not a maniac at eighteen?

I have a few candles stored in a drawer in my dining room. They’re meant for romantic dinners and special occasions, but since the arrival of our three children they have lain unnoticed among the napkins and other things. They are waiting to be taken out and lit to share their glow with anyone who will take the time to bask in their brilliance.
Are not our souls like those candles, patiently waiting for someone to come and let us be ourselves? We are all waiting for our own moments to shine; we each have a special light, unmatched by any other.
Candles are made up of wax and a wick; we have bodies, but our essence lies in our minds and souls. Candles are unique in their colors, shapes and designs. Our life histories and experiences are the backdrops of who we are, but our minds are like candle wicks, and make our passions flame. Unlike the candles in my drawer, who get used or not used depending on my whims, we control our own thoughts, and how brightly we will burn or dimly we will shine.
