Dear sir / madam,

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In thepast, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and thecorporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that thereis a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of theirorganizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs),large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. Onesimple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independentlywithout direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towardsthe supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience andresearch, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with theemployees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.

In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have theability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is truedepends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate. Theseorganizat Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

Dear sir / madam,

"All I know about leadership I learned from . . ." What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?

Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to ap* myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.

When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do.www.liuxue.la When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

Dear sir / madam,

Due to the comprehensiveness of Chinas reform and open policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England.

The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of Chinas new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business. With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly. As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 2001, I was so nervous that I didnt score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Com*r Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives. My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties? With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book Jack: Straight from the Gutby Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, 2003, I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT.

To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies. Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company. In May, 2005, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned. During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challenging environment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable re*.

Dear sir / madam,

As a 23-year-old aspiring student who has grown up and received hiseducation in pace with the evolution of China's market economy over the past twodecades,I deem myself in possession of many professional qualities forundertaking a career in advanced marketing and business management. I believethat I have demonstrated more creativity, management skills,English languageproficiency, and the courage to accept challenges than most of my peers on anumber of important occasions-being selected from a large number of compe*sto study at x University of x on an exchange program, winning prize in the x forUniversity Students, launching my own company upon completing my undergraduateprogram. My interest and my demonstrated abilities show me unmistakably that totake up a lifelong career in high-level marketing management will be veryappropriate for me because that is where my potential lies. In order to scalenew heights academically and to lay a solid foundation for my later-day careerdevelopment,I would like to ap* for a Master's program in internationalmarketing at the prestigious Business School in x University. For me,this is aself-conscious attempt to face challenge and to transcend my former self. Iexpect to be initiated into a first-rate academic environment in which myacademic foundation is consolidated and my business potential isstrengthened.

It was in x Technology and Business School that I completed myundergraduate education, majoring in marketing. As an academic discipline, marketing fascinated me for its increasingly important strategic role in modernmanagement and for its interdisciplinary character,as it encompasses managementscience, psychology, sociology, statistics, etc. From the very outset of myundergraduate program,I realized the importance of seeking a comprehensivedevelopment,on both academic and personal levels,in order to become a seniormanagement professional in the future. Therefore, throughout my undergraduateprogram,I endeavored to make full exploitation of all the available educationalresources of my university to improve my academic performance. An examination ofmy academic transcript will indicate that I have maintained a year-by-yearascendance in my study. Apart from that,I have also been very active inextracurricular activities and learned German and x languages besides English. My ability to perform independent research was cultivated and improved throughwriting my internship treatise and graduation thesis, both of which were given a95-point score, the highest score in my class. In particular,my thesis On theMarketing of Hi-Tech Products,by focusing on the major business risks involvedin the marketing of hi-tech products and on the short and uncertain life cycleof those products, was rated "Excellent" for detailed ***yses and novelperspectives that I offered in it.

The most important part of my undergraduate graduate program is definitelymy short but memorable stay in x. As a junior,I was selected through acompetitive screening test to embark on a 4-month exchange program with x's xPolytechnic on the strengths of my distinguished academic performance,Englishproficiency and com*r skills. This exciting and memorable experience provedextremely beneficial to me-I gained marked improvement in my English, wasexposed to a totally different life style and educational system, and achievednew understanding of the concept of marketing. Plunged into a new academicenvironment,I demonstrated a creative and a critical spirit rare in Chinesestudents, and won appreciation from my x professors. In attending the courseHigh Tech Marketing,my team members and I spent the entire semester verifyingthe plausibility of a business proposal that I raised but was rejected by my xadvisor. Under my insistence and through my continued refinement,my businessproposal achieved eventual success and has been incorporated into the overallbusiness plan of x Company. In another course International Business Plan, myfruitful collaboration with my x classmates led to our team's winning of theunprecedented full mark in the final evaluation of our course project. I alsoaccumulated important experience of performing group research in the eAcademyproject headed by Dr. x,in which I was responsible for the marketing planningof the enterprise.

Upon completing my undergraduate program, with the support of my friendsand family members,I launched my own x Trade Company that deals in medicalequipment and provides hospital management consulting service. In doing this,Ibecame one of the few Chinese graduates who established their own business. Mybusiness impulse originated from two sources. The first is my participation inthe x for University Students in which my team won Excellence Award (myresponsibility was to formulate marketing plans for our "Optimum" Company and toconduct market surveys). Another is my internship as a senior student at ane-commerce company during which I planned and organized market investigations inpreparation for the marketing of the company's latest product-HospitalManagement Information System. I saw myself as possessing necessary businessmanagement skills and marketing potential.

Managing my own company, making real business plans and designing realmarketing strategies, all those have allowed me to ap* my knowledge and to tapmy business potential. In making this bold move,I wish to develop a clearunderstanding of what I am good at and to chart the course of my future careerdevelopment. My present application for a Master's program at your esteemeduniversity is motivated by my need to receive further academic input that willenable me to develop my company into a major enterprise.

According to modern management theories, successful enterprises must behighly customer-oriented and marketing is no longer the job of a particularfunctional department of an enterprise. As a developing country with a plannedeconomy for many decades,China lacks a well-developed science of management andmarketing, and the current marketing practices are far from mature as marketingas a standard academic discipline is only of recent origin. Yet this may prove ablessing in disguise for me as I am located at the crucial point of China'sdevelopment in marketing theory and practice and I will enjoy greater chances ofsuccess. In my proposed degree program,I would like to focus on the marketingof Hi-tech products and on the marketing of multinational companies undercultural pluralism. The relationship between marketing and cultural pluralismhas long been my major research concern and during my study in x I have alreadypaid special attention to the impact of cultural differences between East andWest on marketing. In my future studies,I will be exposed a greater culturaldiversity, which I believe will further facilitate my study and research. It isan art to deal with the subtle relationship between culture and marketing and Ineed to gain more understanding and experience in this regard.

Young as I am,I am fully aware of the transitory nature of life and allthat I can do is to race against time to maximize knowledge and expertise and toenrich the value of my life within the limited span of my life. Through myfuture study,I wish to develop myself into a marketing specialist. This is anobjective, and I am in possession of the necessary foundation, academic andprofessional, and the potential for realizing this objective.

Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

When I was doing internship at the renowned x Cosmetics Co. Ltd,I wasdee* impressed by the motto from x,the founder of the company-"Believe inMiracle and Miracle will Indeed Happen." At one point during my undergraduateeducation I was very frustrated because I found that, due to the lack ofeffective methodology of numerical ***ysis, the teaching and the research ofeconomics in China lags far behind the international standard as represented bythe developed countries of the West. As a result, even though I am one of thetop students from the x University of Finance and Economics,I find it difficultfor me to really enter the true realm of economics study. Instead of dealing aheavy blow on me,this discovery motivated me to maximize my efforts in thestudy of mathematics and to ap* for an advanced degree program in statisticsat your well-respected university after having completed my undergraduateprogram. It is my conviction that,as long as I have sufficient confidencemyself and make sufficient efforts,I am bound to accomplish some form ofachievements in the field of statistics and make due contributions to thedevelopment of quantitative research in economics in the Chinese academia.Miracle will indeed happen.

I specialized in accounting at the Accounting College of x University ofFinance and Economics. An undergraduate education in the specialty of accountingcovers knowledge in a wide range of fields-economics,management science, mathematics, statistics, and even sociology. While providing me with a solidacademic foundation, this education has enabled me to ferret out the areas thatcan really capture my interest. I have cherished a strong interest inmathematics since the primary school and developed my talents all the waythrough my middle and high school. But it is only through my undergraduate studythat I have come to realize the vital importance of mathematical approaches tothe study of economics. This very realization has further reinforced mydetermination to choose the career of an applied statistician in the future.Toward such an objective,I have devoted special efforts to the study ofmathematics and statistics. Apart from intensive work in such compulsory coursesas Calculus,Linear Algebra,Theory of Probability,Statistics, and MathematicalStatistics,I have also attended a series of important optional coursesincluding Operational Research,Game Theory of Economics,Sampling Investigationand made full use of my spare time to learn the knowledge of statistics as muchas possible.

My undergraduate education should be described as very rewarding andfruitful. For the past three consecutive years,I have maintained top ranking inmy class and for two consecutive years I was given the "Outstanding Student"Award, winning Level-A scholarships. I have demonstrated special aptitudes inmathematics and in English. My natural talents in mathematics and my dedicatedefforts to mathematics coursework have led my GPA in all the mathematics coursesto reach 3.9,far exceeding the level of average students. In terms of Englishlanguage,I have also been well above average. In the first semester in 1999 Iwon the first prize at the "Freshmen Cup" English Listen Comprehension Contestand in 2001 I won the first prize in the English Contest for College Students inChina, the third prize at the Oral English Contest in x Province. Even though Ihave assumed various responsibilities for extracurricular activities of severalstudent organizations,I have still managed to perform well academically,a factthat should be attributed to my extra diligence, productive study methods, andeffective allocation of my time and energy. From the very outset of myundergraduate career,I made up my mind to fully exploit all the availableresources of my university to achieve comprehensive self-development and what Ihave achieved adequately testifies to the rewarding undergraduate life I havebeen living.

As a science that tries to discover inherent quantitative relationshipsamong different data and make rational statistical inferences by ap*ingrelevant theories and methodologies, statistics has been widely applied in themodern society, its impact penetrating into almost all fields of physical andsocial sciences. With China's reform toward the market economy and its accessioninto the WTO,statistics is becoming increasingly important in China's economiclife. The fact that the subject I am interested in will enjoy a broad prospectof application in China makes me very excited and confident concerning my futurestudy and career. In my proposed program,I will first try to consolidate myfoundation in statistics and then narrow down my interests to focus on TimeSeries Analysis and Statistic Inference.

I believe that to make rational inferences is one of the major functions ofstatistics. In many cases, pure statistical models or time series models canmake more precise inferences and predictions than theoretical models ofeconomics. The dilemma faced by modern economics in making predictions is one ofthe important reasons for me to choose statistics over economics as the area ofmy concentration. As an important aspect of statistical study and research,Iwill try to master one or two advanced statistical software such as Gauss andTSP. In addition,if possible,I wish to be a member of the research group of myfuture advisor under whose direction I can work on a full-length researchproject. It is equally desirable for me to do extensive internship at a specificgovernment organization or a local enterprise so that I can ap* my knowledgeof statistics and test its efficacy.

Apart from the sound undergraduate education that I have received, togetherwith my special achievements in mathematics and English,my creativity, perseverance, and my good logical thinking are three major factors of myimplicit confidence in my future performance, just as they have contributed tomy distinguished performance in the past over most of my peers. Meanwhile,I amalso very proud of my past extracurricular performance, which has considerablyimproved my practical abilities beyond the mere coursework, like teamwork, organization and interpersonal communication. I served as student leader in theStudents Union, editor of the university student newspaper, member of AccountingStudy Group and Youth Volunteer Association. In 2003,I worked part-time asbeauty consultant at the renowned American x Cosmetics Company. An importantexperience directly related to my specialty is the internship I did in 2003 atthe Statistical Bureau of x City during which I worked on a city-wide populationsampling investigation, collecting and ***yzing data and accumulating muchpractical statistical experience.

I prioritize on x University as the school for my Master's program instatistics because a careful study of your esteemed university shows me that itis a world famous university with a long academic tradition. In terms of theteaching and research of statistics,it plays a leading role not only inAmerican but also in international academia. Naturally it becomes my idealchoice. As a student of accounting I have built up a sufficient foundation instatistics and mathematics requisite for a graduate program in statistics. Therefore,I sincerely wish that my application could be seriouslyconsidered.

Yours sincerely,

  Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In thepast,I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and thecorporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that thereis a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of theirorganizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs),large multinational firms,or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. Onesimple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independentlywithout direct instructions from his or her boss.
