身着乳白色航天服的杨利伟迈着从容而稳健的步伐，向*载人航天工程总指挥*走去。

初检透过了，杨利伟又被安排到北京空军总医院参加临床体检。"我当时心里个性高兴，提前三天就去了。护士还和我开玩笑说：“你?蔡?眯牧税桑?"杨利伟回忆说："我当时太想加入这个队伍了!"
然而，加入这个队伍并不是容易的。航天员的选拔*乎"苛刻"，要"过五关斩六将"。医学临床检查，要对人体的几十个大大小小的器官逐一检查。航天生理功能检查，被人们形象地称为"特检"：在离心机上飞速旋转，测试受试者胸背向、头盆向的各种超重耐力;在低压试验舱测试受试者上升到5000米、1万米高空时的耐低氧潜质;在旋转座椅和秋千上检查受试者前庭功能;进行**负压等各种耐力测试。几个月下来，886名初选入围者已所剩无几。

8时59分，0号指挥员下达了"1分钟准备"的口令。火箭即将点火。指挥大厅里充满紧张气氛，许多观看飞船发射的人，紧张得连大气都不敢出。一切在瞬间仿佛凝固了。
杨利伟在飞船内安稳地目视着前方，静静地等待着那辉煌一刻的到来。医学仪器显示，杨利伟的心率：76次/分。据国外有关资料显示，发射前航天员正因激动或紧张，心跳一般都要加快，有的到达140次/分。
指挥大厅里传出了清晰的口令：10、9、8、7、6......这时，屏幕上出现杨利伟向大家敬了一个标准军礼的画面。全场顿时掌声雷动。一位老专家激动得满眼泪花，不住地说："杨利伟，好样的!"
事后，这位老专家向记者说，在这样的特殊时刻，杨利伟敬礼向大家致意告别，心里想的是大家，惟独没有他自我。这不仅仅体现了杨利伟坚强的意志，良好的心理素质，更展现了杨利伟的人格魅力。
那还是1992年的夏天。杨利伟所在部队来到新疆某机场执行训练任务。那天，他驾驶着战鹰在吐鲁番艾丁湖上空作超低空飞行。突然，飞机发出一声巨响，霎时刻仪表显示汽缸温度骤然升高，发动机转速急剧下降!(高尔基的名言)
杨利伟明白，自我碰上了严重的"空中停车"故障，飞机的一个发动机不工作了!紧急关头，杨利伟异常冷静。他一边向地面报告，一边按*时训练的要领作出一系列动作，进行妥善处置。他心里只有一个念头：必须要把飞机开回去!
他稳稳地握住操纵杆，慢慢地收油门，驾驶着只剩一个发动机的战机一点点往上爬升、爬升。500米、1000米、1500米，飞机越过天山山脉，向着机场飞去，稳稳降落在跑道上。
飞船起飞了。飞向了太空。从飞船的舷窗往外望去，杨利伟看到了深邃而美丽的太空。他激动地告诉大家："我看到美丽的太空了。"
这时，大家想起了一个故事。发射前，杨利伟参加飞船模拟发射演练。按照飞行程序，飞船起飞后3分20秒左右，罩在座舱外的"整流罩"将被抛除，航天员在此时能够看见舷窗外的天空。但在演练时，这只能是一种想象中的景况，不会实际发生。因此，指挥大厅里的老总们谁也没料到航天员在此时会有什么反应。
演练在进行，飞船座舱内的杨利伟在一丝不苟、忙而不乱地做着各种规定动作。程序刚刚走到3分20秒，指挥中心大厅里传来杨利伟响亮的报告声："整流罩抛除，我看到窗外的天空了!"
专家们惊讶地问航天员系统总指挥兼总设计师宿双宁："你们的航天员训练得这么好，连这都知道?"宿双宁自豪之情油然而生："开玩笑，你都知道，他还能不知道?!"
为了这个"都知道"，杨利伟付出了太多的艰辛和巨大的发奋。
"神舟"五号飞船发射准备阶段，经专家组无记名投票，杨利伟以其优秀的训练成绩和综合素质，被选入"3人首飞梯队"，并被确定为首*人选。
杨利伟全身心地投入了"强化训练"。"飞船模拟器"成了杨利伟的"家"。飞船模拟器是在地面等比例真实模拟飞船内环境、对航天员进行航天飞行程序及操作训练的专业技术训练场所。飞船从发射升空到进入轨道，再调姿回到地球，持续时刻几十个小时甚至上百个小时，飞行程序指令上千条，操作动作有100多个。舱内的仪表盘红蓝指示灯密密麻麻，各种线路纵横交错，各种设施星罗棋布。要熟悉和掌握它们，并能进行各种操作和故障排除，只有靠反复演练。
于是，杨利伟把能找到的舱内设备图和电门图都找来，贴在宿舍墙上，随时默记。他还用小型摄像机把座舱内部设备和结构拍录下来，输入电脑，刻制了一个光盘，业余时刻有空就放来看。
他自信地告诉记者："此刻我一闭上眼睛，座舱里所有仪表、电门的位置都能想得清清楚楚;随便说出舱里的一个设备名称，我立刻能够想到它的颜色、位置、作用;操作时要求看的操作手册，我都能背诵下来，如果遇到特殊状况，我不看手册，也完全能处理好。"
之后，在5次正常飞行程序考试中，他取得了2个99分、3个100分的好成绩，专业技术综合考评排行第一。
正正因杨利伟对飞船飞行程序和操作程序烂熟于心，在21小时23分钟的飞天之旅中，他的全部操作没有出现一次失误。
飞船进入了太空轨道。这时，杨利伟突然感觉到身体似乎要飘了起来，他清醒地意识到，飞船已经脱离地球引力，来到了太空。在他还来不及体验失重的'奇妙感受时，就觉得好像头朝下脚朝上，十分难受。他意识到这是在太空失重状态下出现的一种错觉，如果不及时克服，就很可能诱发"空间户外病"，影响任务的完成。他用*时训练的方法，凭着顽强的意志，强迫自我在意识上去对抗和战胜这种错觉，很快就调整过来，恢复了正常。
飞船在飞行。舷窗外，阳光把飞船太阳能帆板照得格外明亮，那下边就是人类的美丽家园。蔚蓝色的地球披着淡淡的云层，长长的海岸线在大陆和海洋间清晰可辨。
飞船绕着地球90分钟一圈高速飞行。一会儿白天，一会儿黑夜。黑白交替之间，地球边缘仿佛镶了一道漂亮的金边，景色十分迷人。杨利伟拿起摄像机，赶紧把这壮观的景色拍摄下来。他不由得从心里腾升起从未有过的强烈自豪感，为*人飞上太空感到骄傲。他郑重地在飞行手册上写下了"为了人类的和*与进步，*人来到太空了!"
飞船飞行到第七圈时，他又在太空展示了***和联合**，表达了*人民和*利用太空，造福全人类的完美愿望。
飞船总设计师高度评价杨利伟的太空飞行："不是一般的成功，而是十分成功;不是一般的完美，而是个性完美。"
国外媒体和航天员同行也一致认为：这是一次完美的飞行。

祖国至上：情切切天地间
"我为伟大祖国感到骄傲!"这是杨利伟回到地面后向欢迎的人们说出的肺腑之言。
航天员大队是个团结和睦的群众。在这个群众里，杨利伟享受着温暖，同时也把温暖给予大家。他始终把自我看成是航天员大队中的普通一员。在被选为首飞航天员后，他说，我是代表13位航天员出征太空的。
因此，在太空飞行中，他的心和战友们一向紧紧相连。按照预定的太空飞行计划，杨利伟在太空有5小时的休息时刻。但他只睡了半小时。他说，首次太空飞行，机会太难得了，我要尽可能地体验太空飞行，为战友们将来上太空做准备。
回来后，杨利伟成为了公众人物，有许多活动需要他参加，但只要一有空，他就和战友们在一齐，交流太空飞行心得。回来后不久，他就主动要求参加航天员例行的体能训练。
10月16日，杨利伟成为了全国人民心目中的民族英雄。那天，他回到北京航天城时已是晚上。21小时太空之旅的极度疲劳尚未消除，他就给训练航天员的教员们一个个打电话，向教员们汇报自我在太空的状况。而此时电视里已全是他的新闻和形象，他却仿佛什么都没有发生。
一位老教员感叹地说："难得啊，难得。能在巨大荣耀面前，持续如此*常心态，正是优秀航天员就应具备的素质。"

他在空军时的战友还记得，1997年，当杨利伟透过体检，回到部队等待通知的那一年里，他仍然专心致志地投入到飞行训练中。那年他飞了150多小时，大大超过当时部队规定的飞行时刻。尽管体检耽误了许多时刻，但在这一年的考评中，杨利伟的飞行成绩依然名列前茅。

2008年7月22日，总装备部举行将官晋衔仪式，"航天英雄"杨利伟被授予少将军衔。

飞船模拟器是在地面等比例真实模拟飞船内环境，是对航天员进行航天飞行程序及操作训练的最为重要的航天专业技术训练场所。飞船从发射升空充分进入轨道，到调姿回到地球，飞行程序指令上千条，操作动作几十个。飞船舱内的仪表盘指示灯密密麻麻，各种线路纵横交错，各种设施星罗棋布。要熟悉和掌握它们，并能进行各种操作和排除故障，只有靠在模拟器中反复演练。
杨利伟是个有心人。去年年底做模拟器训练的时候，他用一个小摄像机拍了很多坐舱图片。回来以后，输入电脑，自我刻了一个小VCD，随时播放，尽快地熟悉里面的各种设备---此刻已经熟得一闭眼睛就能想得清清楚楚。
飞船上天之前，杨利伟他们做了十几次强化训练，每一次训练都是杨利伟第一个做。做完以后，给教员带给信息：哪个地方不适宜，哪个程序不到位，哪个地方操作不合理。修改完，后面的人再做，少走了很多弯路。
载人飞船联合测试，杨利伟去的次数最多。在测试推进舱和回到舱分离，然后立刻切换到回到舱的动力系统这个动作的时候，按规定10秒钟务必完成动作，研制人员最快6秒种能够做完，杨利伟只用了5秒。
在首飞选拔的5次正常飞行程序考试中，杨利伟获得了两个99分、3个100分，名列专业技术综合考评第一名，成为首飞航天员第一人选。
出征时刻，杨利伟情绪坦然地走向发射架。那一刻，数亿人的目光注视着他，他背负着一个民族的期望去迎接挑战。"当然，从最坏的角度思考，这毕竟是一次冒险，但冒这个风险值得。我到那里来就是为了执行这个任务，我就是为了执行这个任务而来的。"

杨利伟的家乡是辽宁省葫芦岛市绥中县，这是山海关外一个依山傍海的美丽县城，今年38岁的杨利伟曾经在绥中生活了长达18年的时间，可以说，杨利伟的童年、少年以及一部分青年时代就是在这样一个宁静而*和的小镇度过的。

辽西的许多乡镇素有故事之乡之称。绥中县绥中镇更有“讲古王”、“故事王”摇篮的美誉。绥中清朝时就是辽西及关外各路商贾贩客通往辽南、辽北、辽东的交通要道。称它是东北黑土地上的“丝稠之路”集散地一点也不过份。各大酒家、车店云集镇中。夜晚食宿的客人为了打发寂寞，就集在一起讲出各自从不同地区带来的传说和故事。渐渐地，说书讲古的人在这里便成为了“职业”。讲的、听的、传的多了，这里不仅是商贸的集散地，更是民间传说故事的集散地。这里的家家户户旮旮旯旯都盛满着古老的传说故事。杨利伟的外公、外婆便是当地有名的民间故事家。小利伟从小就常住在听各种民间故事长大的且为讲古说书高手的外公、外婆家中，使他自幼便薰染在外公、外婆及妈妈讲的传说故事里。在大人们讲的各种传说故事中，最令小利伟着迷的是七月七《牛郎会织女》的传说和《嫦娥奔月》、《七仙女下凡》这类飞天神话故事。听多了，具有思索与探密精神的他，便常常在夜晚站在院子里望着浩渺夜空，想像着宇宙里的神奇。他常常对妈妈说：“等我长大后，我一定飞上天空去见牛郎、织女和嫦娥、玉兔。”读小学三年级时的一次春游，学校组织小同学到一家飞机场去参观，摸抚一架架银鹰并观看飞行员驾机为同学们做飞行表演，小利伟激动不已。回校后，他在机场观后感的命题作文中写道：“我长大一定要当一位飞行员，飞上天空对宇宙进行探密。”
