I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentless spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly above. Just because had this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death contest success.

We also must study senior fisherman’s spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain successfully.

The novel told a story about how the old fisherman Santiago struggled with the sea. Santiago gained a huge fish called Marlin after having drifted in the sea for 84 days. It was a fish that is 2 feet longer than the boat and that had dragged his boat for two days before being stabbed to death. It seemed that the old man wasn’t so successful, because he encountered a shark, struggled with the serious environments, even the only spoil——Marlin just left a skeleton. However, the most important thing is that Santiago had never given up for a moment.

In this novel, I am dee*** impressed by his persevering. I admire the old fisherman for his steel-like mind and persistence. I think there’s a real young man inside him, although he is at an old age and no longer goes back to his youth. From the strong comparison between the old look and the young heart, we can easily find that it is the positive firm spirits that make us hold our hopes and keep trying all the time and finally guide the roads towards success.

Through the vivid description about the struggle between human and nature, Hemingway expresses his opinion that the courage inside human beings can help us face any failure and overcome any difficulty. In the book, the hero Santiago was beat by the shark, which we regard as a symbol of doom, but he chose to struggle with the fortune instead of losing faith in his life. Just the same as the hero Santiago, all of us will meet with various kinds of difficulties in our daily life, which is a rule of human’s fate. So how can we adjust our attitudes toward these and what should we do with so many problems? The old fisherman tell us the truth——“Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not be defeated”.

When I was a middle school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.At least, for my part, that is true.

Firstly,I would like to review some information about this book.Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.

The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.

The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

This book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the man’s braveness and persistence.

In this book, in order to suggest the profundity of the old man’s sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, Hemingway purposefully likens Santiago to Christ, who, according to Christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. Crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which Hemingway creates the symbolic parallel between Santiago and Christ. When Santiago’s palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of Christ suffering his stigmata. Later, when the sharks arrive, Hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls Christ’s march toward Calvary. Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life.

The major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.

Santiago?,the old man of the novella’s title, Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. Despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance.

The marlin?,Santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at the end of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. Manolin?,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares dee*** for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.

Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ?,Perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in Santiago’s village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.

Martin, like Perico, Martin, a café owner in Santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiago’s supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid.

From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. Almost as a reminder of Santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat.” But the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless.

Because Santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tale as a chronicle of man’s battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of man’s place within nature. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own observation: “man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch.

The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of Cienfuegos” worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny.

While it is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.

Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.

Santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of Africa three times. The first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. In fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported by the final image of the lions. Because Santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces—life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration—of nature.

This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .

Have you heard or readYes,it is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works. It is the story of an old Cuban fisherman went to the sea, fought with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. After a few of cruel fights ,he won. Though he was so beaten with the trip, he still full of brave. He was a hero.

is a famous book and it was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. There is a eminent sentence in the book—“But man is not made for defeat,” he said ,‘A man can be destroyed but not defeated.’

When I was a little girl, I was timid. In summer, I always went swimming with friends. We played happily and swam quickly. The border of the swimming pool is 1.2 metres deep, but the center is 1.8 metres. My friends were so brave to swim though the swimming pool but I was so afriad that I can’t .My friends told me it was only a little difficulties.‘ You must overcome it.There were more big difficulties in our lives and waiting we to slove . If we were afraid these little problem, how can we face to setback? So we must be brave and try our best to overcome the problems.’ After their words, I was full of courage. I did some ready exercise and tired to swim though. Finally, I succeed. We all felt excited and they celebrated to me. Yes, we should be brave and try out best to overcome difficult problems. We can’t give up easily.

We all know the big earthquake which had reached eight on the Richter scale in Wenchuan. It was a sad and shock earthquake. All things lay in ruins in a few seconds. The suffering of the people was extreme. There were many people been dead. Many people were wounded under the falling building.People felt painful but they were staunch. They waited rescue persons to save them. A 60-year-old woman , she was so great that she had insisted 196 hours. A pig,it had insisted 36 days. Many people were saved afters 4 days. They were all heros. They were brave and staunch,so they were still living. In this earthquake, we can realize the government’s strong responsibility and 1.3million people were united and kind. The people who injured showed the willpower and they were firm as the fishman.

is a good book.I learn many from the book.It teach me a person should be firm and brave in our live. We can’t be afraid and give up the difficultics. We must try our best to overcome the problems. We should trust ourself we can do it. Nothing is impossible.

  The filling of

I read when I was in junior middle school. At that time I do not know why the old man persists to take dentuso back. It’s so dangerous to fight with sharks. But he did not give up. But now I’m really proud of Santiago. He is so brave and persevering. “But a man is not made for defeat” he said “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

Santiago was old just as Hemingway said “Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.” He think every day is a new day. No matter how old he is. He said “It’s better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.”

Santiago was poor; he had nothing except a little boat and harpoon. But he said “Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.” Santiago was alone. Mandolin can not go to sea with him because of his parents. He catches fishes alone. He fights with sharks alone. He can talk to nobody except himself. No one will help him. But even though he faced hungry; weary and difficulty alone, he does not give up.

Somebody said Santiago was a failure. Because at last he said he wishes that it had been a dream and the boy cried for him can really approve it. In this way I think Santiago was a lucky person. Because he still had Mandolin. The boy loved him and pitied him. If Mandolin had no money his own, he begged or stole to make sure that Santiago had enough to eat and fresh baits for his lines. The old man accepts his kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride. I think Santiago is a hero and he is not a failure. Because catch fish is a part of his life and it is the memory of his mind and he catch a really big fish back at last. The value of his life was completely reflected in the way he catch fish. He is the real winner in his own world. After I think about this book and Santiago. I realized that I’m not brave enough. I can not stay hopeful when I face laugh and indifferent. And I don’t have enough courage to do what I want to do. I’m so afraid of this world. I’m so afraid of the people’s words who speak it behind my back. I’m so cowardly and that’s the reason I always lose. Now I know what to do. Don’t mind others. Be myself. I need possess the quality of reason and shay cheerful and undefeated. Be kind and happy. Be strong and optimistic.

After I read the book that is called “The old man and the sea” I was dee*** moved by the old man and his spirit.

The book written by Hemingway tells us a story that an old man whose name is Santiago went out to do some fishing on the sea on his own but down on his luck he hadn’t caught any fish for 84 days. Next day he caught a huge marlin which is bigger than his boat and took a formidable battle with it. He beat it at the end. When he was on the way home the smells of blood of the marlin draw a lot of sharks’ attention and they fought for it. In order to protect the marlin and him theold man tried his best to fight with them. After a cruel fight he won it and cameback home tiredly. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin at last he is also a great hero in many people’s heart.

In the article the old man is a great man. Although he failed for many time in his lifehe never gave up. He is a steel-willing man who insisted his dream and work hard. You can destroy him but you can’t beat him. Whatever he faced to he would never yield to the difficult which shows a strong spirit.

In our lives I think we should learn something from the old man which will make us have a more valuable life. Whenever and wherever we meet trouble we should never give up and try our best to overcome it. We should always keep on our dream and make it come true. Every one has his backbone which can’t be bended by anyone which is very important for everyone in his whole life. If we meet difficulty in our life we should face it bravely and work out some way to solve theproblem whatever would happen at last. We can be destroyed but we can’t bebeat by anything or anyone. If you failed for many times in your life you wouldn’t surrender because if you try to do it you may succeed in your life but if you do not do it you would not be succeed forever. Everyone has his advantages and disadvantages in his life but we should face to our disadvantages and we must beconfident which would also make us be confident of our life. We should have faith in what we do in our life we will have a more beautiful life in the future and our dream will come true. We should pay more attention to what we do during our liferather than what we will get at the end because I think it is more important than any thing you get finally. If you enjoy you life not something you get you will have a meaningful life and a noble spirit. It will hurt you when you pay more attention to what you get in the future. It will also make you do something wrong which is bad for other people our society and our country.

I’m impressed by the sentence which is “We can be destroyed but we can’t bebeat.” I think everyone should do it no matter what happen in our life. This book makes me know something I didn’t know in the past. The book and the old man have a great influence in my life. I love this book.

Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces-life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration-of nature.

This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .

On summer vacation of this year I studied in novel " old man and sea " of Hemingway famous writer of U.S.A. . I admire the old fishermans will in the novel very much he lets me understand that a person must have unremitting spirit could succeed . What the novel is described is an old fisherman almost the sixty years old when go to sea and fish alone once have angled to a big fish but can not draw. After tough fisherman and fish have socialized for a few days just find this is a big Malins fish which exceeds several times of ones own fishing boat though know perfectly well that it is very difficult to win does not give up yet. Because big Malin fish fishlike smell of wound attract odd herds of shark vie for the food again later but the old man is still unwilling to give up like this stress the tight encirclement finally take the large fish back to fishing port let other fishmen admire it endlessly. The old fisherman thinks that as I read ": It is really too close from here to coast perhaps there are bigger fish in the farther place ……" Whenadmire very much because this old fisherman in the persons because play not for some fishing he already at this moment I but he is not satisfied with the existing state of affairs but advance towards greater goal. Seeing us again meet some little difficulties at ordinary times all of us complain bitterly. We are the future of the motherland should be as ambitious as this old man go to pursue well greater goal. Read as me " big Malin fish is it enclose light fishing boat move about is it get mast to twine cable fast to begin old man right hand hold steel fork high jump out in a flash affording to try ones best above water in it a sound of wail has finished the life of the loud fish it floats on the surface of water silently ……"Whenthe I one heart is too fall like pieces of stone not big.

I admire that kind of fearing of the old man at all unremitting spirit very much though know rivals strength is very strong but he has not shrunk back at all meets the difficulty. Just because there is this kind of spirit the old fisherman has obtained the victory of the trial of strength of this life and death. We should study the old fishermans spirit too in life do the thing and is not afraid of the difficulty could achieve success . Read big blood offensive smell of fish smell one shark fall over each other to visit to vie for the food left hand of old man pull a muscle just he can only use right hand can weapon attacked to used for defend oneself with stick mouth of swordfish that catch everything and has driven away this herd of shark finally. But big meat of fish take into big half already but old man criticize ones own left hand " when the work this when have a rest " humorously also I am subdued by old mans optimistic spirit too. In life some losses are unavoidable we should treat the optimistic attitude cant worry about petty gain or loss .

Finally the novel sees with a teenager that old fisherman has 18 feet of big long Malins fish totally in the tolerance the ones that have described this fish are enormous again prove that old fishermans difficulty overcome is big than ordinary. Old fishermans spirit that makes great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled we should be like him too can t be satisfied with the current situation should be positive upwards it should be unremitting to do anything it must not give up halfway to meeting difficulty should meet the difficulty. Only in this way we could obtain greater success and victory .

The senior fisherman socialized several days after the fish, only then discovered this was the big marlin which one surpassed the oneself fishing boat several fold, although knew perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up. Afterwards and further because in the big marlin wound fish fishy smell brought in several crowds of shark fish snatches the food, but the old person still did not hope like this to give up, finally highlighted encircles tightly, returned to the big fish belt the fishing port, lets other fishermen not admire already.

the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway"s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.

Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.

My first impression of this story was from screen.

It"s long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don"t remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It"s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the ***e,though I didn"t think she"s beautiful. But she"s smart. However, I didn"t pay much attention to the plot. I thought it"s so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven"t read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didn"t understand the story at that time. I didn"t know why it called Pride and Prejudice.Of course someone was pride, but I didn"t find where" s the prejudice. I thought it"s normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I"m a prejudiced person so I can"t find where"s wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

After a week's insistence, I finally finished reading "the old man and the sea" this foreign name. The book left a deep impression on me, I can't forget it.This novel mainly wrote one old man fishing in the sea alone. He caught a big fish, the fish head and upper body tied to the edge of the boat. But he met the shark, the old man pulled out all the stops and shark struggle, sharks eat fish can eat to all live to 800 pounds.

Look at the book, my heart can't be calm once in a long time, the common and respectable old man made me dee*** understood: "perchance life should not be any difficulties, should do their best efforts and hardships do indomitable struggle of life.

Santiago ALGOL grandpa's stubborn spirit really makes me admire.Whenever I read about grandpa during a fierce battle with the sharks, I feel I do not know want nervous or worry about grandpa, grandpa, however, is always the spirit of optimism to face some great difficulties.See here, I couldn't help thinking of yourself, when I met with some difficulties, I always feel very frustrated, feel very tired, really want to escape from reality.Look at somebody else's Santiago ALGOL grandpa, undeterred by whether encounter any difficulty, but bravely to face!

So it should be human, not a death mask, to have confidence in myself.Even if we encounter difficulties, should not let it to beat, should bravely to destroy it.

I believe that with my efforts, I will become like Santiago ALGOL grandpa so brave, so brave to fight.

The old man and the sea creates a classic image of a tough guy. Santiago, an old fisherman in Cuba, went out to sea alone and caught a huge Marlin after 84 days of nothing. This is a big fish two feet longer than his boat that the old man has never seen or heard of. The fish is strong and dragging

Why didnt Hemingway let the old man win in the end? In the words of the old man in the novel, "a man is not born to be defeated", "a man can be destroyed, but he cant be defeated." This is the philosophy of the old man and the sea. Theres no denying that as long as its human, its flawed. When a person admits this defect and tries to overcome it instead of succumbing to it, whether he can finally overcome his own defect, he is a winner, because he has overcome his own compromise on the defect, he is the winner of his own courage and confidence. The old fisherman is the winner who dares to challenge his own defects and courage and confidence. From the perspective of worldly view of victory, the old fisherman is not the final winner, because although he defeated the great Marlin at first, the great Marlin was finally eaten by the sharks. He just returned to the shore with the white bone shelf of the great marlin, that is to say, the sharks are the winners. However, in the eyes of idealists, the old fisherman is the winner, because he has never been to the sea, not to the great marlin, not to the shark compromise and surrender. As music master Beethoven said, "I can be destroyed, but I cant be conquered.".

Human nature is strong, and human beings have their own limits, but it is precisely because people like the old fishermen challenge the limits again and again, and surpass them that the limits are expanded again and again, placing greater challenges in front of human beings. In this sense, such heroes as the old fisherman Santiago, whether they challenge the limit of success or failure, are worthy of our eternal respect.

Because what he brings us is the most noble confidence of human beings!

I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It’s pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didn’t think she’s beautiful. But she’s smart. However, I didn’t pay much attention to the plot. I thought it’s so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven’t read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn’t understand the story at that time.

I didn’t know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn’t find where’ s the prejudice. I thought it’s normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I’m a prejudiced person so I can’t find where’s wrong.

I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingways literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers confidence in Hemingways capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribners, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkners "The Bear" and Herman Melvilles Moby-Dick.

Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bed-face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up-brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross.

Manolin, however, still cares dee* for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.

He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish-he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days.
