Every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or two good friends. My friends will listen to me when I want to speak, will wipe my eyes when I cry, will take care of me when I am sick, and my friends will go together with me side by side through this journey of life. As students, we could share more time with our friends. The friendship in our young hearts is pure, fresh and simple. I often feel very lucky to have a lot of good friends. Especially when I had Justin as one of my best friends. Justin was my English teacher from the USA. I met him in 1996 when I was a student who could only speak very little English. Justin was a vivid young man with a bright smile on his face, and he always had his special way to make the class active and attractive. He taught us English by telling stories, playing games, singing songs, and even dancing. I could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on Christmas Eve. It was so interesting and unforgettable. Justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study English well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others’ lives. I know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. Facing this valuable emotion neither nationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith, under-standing, and care. Justin is the best friend I have ever had, and I know I will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory. Friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. It is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. It is also like a cup of tea.
When we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink. However, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. More and more people forget to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. They work hard in order to gain a higher position, in the society and to earn more money for their work. Of course, we don’t deny that it is important to find a bet-ter place in our lives, but we wish more and more people could pay a little more attention to themselves and their friends. All of us have to spare some time for personal lives.
We have to find the chance to express our emotion and love. When staying with our friends, we can release ourselves pletely. We can do whatever we want, we can laugh together, talk together, and even cry to-gether. I should say that being together with our best friends is the most wonderful moment of our lives.

People are alarmed by the succession of campus fires in recent years. But life is about whom you love and who you hurt. It’s about how you feel about yourself. It’s about trust, happiness and compassion. It’s about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance and building confidence. It’s about what you say and what you mean. It’s about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. And we should always remember to be ourselves. Other might have things that we desire but being what we really are is the only trail leading to the true colors of life. Most of all, it’s about choosing to use your life to touch someone else’s in a way that could have never been achieved otherwise.
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers; we buy more but enjoy them less. We’ve learnt how to make a living but not a life, we’ve added years to life, but not life to years. And it is time for us to choose whether to make a difference in our life.

This famous Indian poet once said, “Life is given to us, and we earn it by giving it.
” As the saying goes, nature is given to us, and we earn it by contributing to it.
However, most people nowadays just want to ask for more from the nature.

Therefore, the environment around us is becoming worse and worse.

We, as school students, can also join in recycling activities to protect the environment.
For example, our class set up a recycling center beside the back door, it is very useful.
It is used to collect the waste paper and plastic bottles.
In the past, our classmates used to throw all of these into the trashcan.
At the very beginning of this collecting activity, it was not so warm-welcomed.
Later, more and more people were influenced by the others and joined this collecting activity.
Gradually, all the students in our class form a good habit to protect the environment.
All of us will now put away the reusable things instead of throwing them into the trashcan.

When having to make a choice most people think they have to choose between the two. Far too often people go for the latter and naturally choose fun. For instance many people would prefer watching television, or more commonly known as TV to exercising, we all know that it’s true, right? The problem is, if you don’t exercise you will become weak and ultimately out of shape and it is no fun to be out of shape, right? So the question is, why not turn exercise into fun?
As an example, if TV is your favorite thing to do, why not connect your TV set to an electric generator that is charged by a stationary bike, you know, the kind of bike you peddle, that doesn’t go anywhere. So think about it, the more you watch TV, the fitter you’ll be.
Now if you are the kind of person who thinks listening to music is fun and you spend many hours alone tap tap tapping your fingers and your toes to the beat, why not take it one step further and get up on your feet and dance, dance, dance.
Or maybe you’re the type of person who prefers being with your friends. There are many ways one could have fun with their pals. For instance you could just hang out and do nothing or better yet you could get into a friendly game of basketball or football there is no rule that says everyone has to be as good as Yao Ming or David Beckham, right?
However sometimes there just aren’t enough players, or you may even be alone in which case you could go for a ride on your bike, maybe, stop by the library to borrow a book, or go for a walk around the park and enjoy the sunshine and scenery. Before you know it, you’re having fun.
Let’s face it, exercise is work and when we think of work we think of thankless underpaid hardships yet it needn’t be this way, if we think of exercise as fun.

As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Commi* for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragons tooth. This is a true story.
65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.
In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragons mouth.
He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 20xx, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

Do you feel sorry for the animals that are killed by the millions every day?
Do we really need to kill animals?
Let us now think of the reasons for using dead animals. People often use animals for food, make-up, medicine and especially for the clothes. Fur coats are definitely a luxury. Yes, they are warm but really they are mostly a symbol of wealth. Do you know how much a mink coat cost?
A report said in an open letter published recently, a Dutch animal-rights group has asked their much-loved Queen to stop wearing fur. The Group pointed out that making clothing from fur represents cruelty to animals. " Fur belongs to animals, not to human beings."
Nowadays a lot of greedy people hunt and kill wild animals and birds, so as to make money by selling their hides at high prices. This kind of killing should be stopped and seriously punished. If we don’t take actions to protect the wild animals and birds, they will soon disappear from the globe. Man will one day find himself a very lonely creature on earth indeed.
Until such a day, when we finally realized that we no longer have these friends or neighbors, what are we human beings going to say? Sorry? No, it is too late to say sorry to them.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please consider what I have said to you this afternoon. Having fun
When having to make a choice most people think they have to choose between the two. Far too often people go for the latter and naturally choose fun. For instance many people would prefer watching television, or more commonly known as TV to exercising, we all know that it’s true, right? The problem is, if you don’t exercise you will become weak and ultimately out of shape and it is no fun to be out of shape, right? So the question is, why not turn exercise into fun?
As an example, if TV is your favorite thing to do, why not connect your TV set to an electric generator that is charged by a stationary bike, you know, the kind of bike you peddle, that doesn’t go anywhere. So think about it, the more you watch TV, the fitter you’ll be.
Now if you are the kind of person who thinks listening to music is fun and you spend many hours alone tap tap tapping your fingers and your toes to the beat, why not take it one step further and get up on your feet and dance, dance, dance.
Or maybe you’re the type of person who prefers being with your friends. There are many ways one could have fun with their pals. For instance you could just hang out and do nothing or better yet you could get into a friendly game of basketball or football there is no rule that says everyone has to be as good as Yao Ming or David Beckham, right?
However sometimes there just aren’t enough players, or you may even be alone in which case you could go for a ride on your bike, maybe, stop by the library to borrow a book, or go for a walk around the park and enjoy the sunshine and scenery. Before you know it, you’re having fun.
Let’s face it, exercise is work and when we think of work we think of thankless underpaid hardships yet it needn’t be this way, if we think of exercise as fun.
Today I am going to tell you a true story about a life-altering event that happened to an old hunter from Tibet’s northern lands.
Early in the morning, the hunter saw a group of Tibetan antelopes on grass hill near his tent. He rushed out of his tent and mounted his horse with his rifle. The antelopes all quickly ran away except one. A strong, fat one ran only a few steps and came back. It looked imploringly at him, stepped up towards him and then knelt on its knees with tears streaming down from its eyes. Feeling softhearted for a flashing moment, the hunter did not pull the trigger. But after he shut his eyes, pulled the trigger and the antelope fell onto the ground in a kneeling position with discernible tears still on its face.
The old hunter restlessly cut the Tibetan antelope open. What he had saw made him choke on his breath and the knife fell on the ground with a crash. He saw a baby antelope lying in the womb, surely dead. All of a sudden he realized why the antelope was strong and fat and why it heavily knelt before him and cried: It was imploring him to have mercy on its baby!
The old hunter buried the antelope and its unborn baby together with his hunting rifle that day.
I will never forget this story. Today I told it to more people and I’d like to point out: In the world the kneeling of loving mothers, whatever of human being or animal is sacred. Lives of all kinds are equal. Let us care about the nature, care about our life with our affection and respect to the life. Hopefully we could live harmoniously, as part of nature.

Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World Health Organisation.
According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year.
Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.
Heart attack and stroke
UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.
Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack.
Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery.
If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be smoking-related - half of all these deaths will be in middle age.
Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke.
Lung problems
Another primary health risk associated with smoking are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people in the UK every year.
US studies have shown that men who smoke increase their chances of dying from the disease by more than 22 times.
Women who smoke increase this risk by nearly 12 times.
Lung cancer is a difficult cancer to treat - long term survival rates are poor.
Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical cancers, and leukaemia.
Another health problem associated with tobacco is emphysema, which, when combined with chronic bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
he lung damage which causes emphysema is irreversible, and makes it extremely difficult to breathe.
Harm to children
Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of miscarriage, is associated with lower birthweight babies, and inhibited child development.
Smoking by parents following the birth is linked to sudden infant death syndrome, or cot death, and higher rates of infant respiratory illness, such as bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia.
Nicotine, an ingredient of tobacco, is listed as an addictive substance by the US authorities.
Although the health risks of smoking are culmulative, giving up can yield health benefits regardless of the age of the patient, or the length of time they have been smoking.
Future impact
By 20xx, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to reach 10 million, causing 17.7% of all deaths in developed countries.
There are believed to be 1.1 billion smokers in the world, 800 million of them in developing countries.

ladies and gentlemen, teachers, my fellow students:
i am very excited and feel it's a great honor to stand here to deliver my speech. what i'm going to talk about is “choice in my life”
i can still remember the first time i failed in a singing contest. i immediately ran to my grandma, shedding lots of tears of course! i cried loudly and could hardly utter a word!
then, badly needed comforting words and touch came from grandma. i gradually regained my sense of pride and a sensible control of my feelings. yet, head down, i said: “grandma, i have no choice, and i have to give up, right?” “look at me, my dear!”she said gently. i looked up, straight into her eyes. what i saw was a shining, sweet, and loving stream from the bottom of her heart! then, there came the gentle voice of hers: “no, no, no…” her head shaking, while eyes smiling. “why don't you give more attention to the details?” she continued.
no other words were needed any more! i started practicing and rehearsing once again, paying special attention to those little things that i used to ignore. as a consequence, my overall performance was quickly elevated to a new high! without much trouble, in another singing contest held months later, i won!
what do i learn from this experience? never give up lightly! life's full of opportunities, and lots of them! to realize your dreams and fulfill your potential, you must learn to work hard and smart and steer your lifeboat wisely! as a li ling's sportswear commercial goes “everything is possible!” but not without sweat, devotion, and tears sometimes!
life is a long journey, during which we are surely going to face many challenges, experience lots of failures, and equally, many opportunities are waving to us, while sweet rewards are waiting for us! to transform these opportunities into fruitful results, or turn those challenges and failures into valuable assets, we must learn to seize the good ones and not to retreat lightly in front of difficulties.

Because, I think, it is a typical succestory. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the proceof surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the proceand the result. The reward of succewill be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of succeentails a combination of both the proceand the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another ***ogy.
If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, succeacquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
The concept of succeis not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease, says the World Health Organisation.
According to their figures, it is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year.
Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says that its impact on world health is not fully assessed.
Heart attack and stroke
UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s are five times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers.
Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the arteries, which can then become blocked and starve the heart of bloodflow, causing the attack.
Often, smokers who develop this will require complex and risky heart bypass surgery.
If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance that your eventual death will be smoking-related - half of all these deaths will be in middle age.

Hello, everyone. It’s nice to share stories of my growing pains with you. Growing up is not always enjoyable. As the old saying goes "No pains, no gains", my pains provided me with an opportunity for better personal growth.
Once I took part in a birthday party of my classmate. It was really such a great time that I went home with a pretty happy look. In the evening, I wrote some memories of this evening in my diary. But my mother peeked at my diary, which I never ever had expected. I felt so sad that I couldn’t help arguing with her. I even shouted at her, "How can you look at my dairy!"
Then a cold war happened between us and lasted for almost a week. I finally apologized to her for my arguing, and my mother also promised not to peek at my diary any more. Luckily, my mother and I learned to understand each other from then on. Thanks very much for your attention.
Today the topic of my impromtu speech is that when it is dark enough, you can see the stars. I can’t agree with this saying more. In my opinion, Darkness is about the frustrations. “enough” is about the effort and the “stars” are the hopes, dreams or success. So, I have three points to support my opinion.

The stars are over there in the sky all the time. We can’t see them because they are hidden behind the sunlignt. So, we shouldnot waste our time. Rather, we should turn to the night to find our stars. So before we set out for our dreams. It’s very important to know what exactly we want and which direction to go to find it.
Second, we should be prepared for wresting with frustrations and difficulties. We can’t expect that the way to our objective are smooth and easy. In the darkness, we may feel cold, lonely and be afraid of some unexpected frustrations, just as on the way to our dreams and success. But, only in darkness could we see the stars. Similarly, only by experiencing harships and setbacks can we be clear about our goals and objectives. So, we should be not afraid of the difficulties we have to experience. Rather, we should hold a positive attitude to fully prepared for them.
The last but not the least point is that we should keep in faith and don’t give up. Sometime we may feel disappointed after having been working hard for such a long time but still can’t reach our dreams. But, we shouldn’t give up and instead we should just keep in faith. May be our efforts are not enough. We need to work hard and keep waiting for a little bit longer, and we will see the hope soon.

Life isn’t about keeping score. Life isn’t about your shoes or your hair or the color of your skin. In fact it’s not about if you have lots of friends or if you are alone, and it’s not about how accepted or unaccepted you are. Life just isn’t about that.
But life is about whom you love and who you hurt. It’s about how you feel about yourself. It’s about trust, happiness and compassion. It’s about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance and building confidence. It’s about what you say and what you mean. It’s about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. And we should always remember to be ourselves. Other might have things that we desire but being what we really are is the only trail leading to the true colors of life. Most of all, it’s about choosing to use your life to touch someone else’s in a way that could have never been achieved otherwise.
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers; we buy more but enjoy them less. We’ve learnt how to make a living but not a life, we’ve added years to life, but not life to years. And it is time for us to choose whether to make a difference in our life.

People are alarmed by the succession of campus fires in recent years. In each of these accidents heavy casualties were reported – houses were burned down students lost their lives and properties were damaged. Faced with such a chilling fact people keep asking “What on earth results in these repeated tragedies?”
A brief survey of them reveals that human factors still prove to be the leading causes. For example three of these fires were caused by the students’ use of electric water-heaters. As students often leave the heaters unattended the risks are rather high should the water in the bottle boil dry while no one is around to turn off the power. In other cases fires were also caused by stoves candles cigarette butts etc.
Since most of these disasters could have been prevented if proper precautions had been taken students should be better educated on the importance and measures of fire control. The following three reminders are of particular importance for us students: First learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Second double-check candles heaters stoves and other electric appliances and make sure there are no open flames before leaving rooms. Lastly do not smoke in the dorm.
